I wrestled back and forth on what to say Valentine’s Day. Personally, I don’t really do Valentine’s Day (that said, if you LOVE Valentine’s day and enjoy making it a big deal - that’s totally cool!).
So I looked again at the "V" in Valentine’s Day... VDay... and here are two things I hope brightens your day on this special day.
I wrestled back and forth on what to say Valentine’s Day. Personally, I don’t really do Valentine’s Day - the idea of designating one day for love and the commercial bru-ha-ha of getting roses and having a romantic dinner lost its appeal for me after high school (that said, if you LOVE Valentine’s day and enjoy making it a big deal - that’s totally cool!).
This is partly why Lila Sutra didn’t do a Valentine’s Day sale or promotion. It felt a bit inauthentic (my retail friends think I’m mad). I also know that fundamentally, this business is not about me and that it’s about YOU. So I went back and forth on what to share with you that would give you value in reading it and would also stay true to me.
I looked again at the "V" in Valentine’s Day... VDay... and here are two things I hope brightens your day on this special day:
1. Married. Attached. Single. Who cares.
The single crowd often feels left out on Valentine’s Day. There are anti-valentines parties for this reason. It feels like an unspoken thing that Valentine’s is for partnered love (and it sometimes feels like the media, restaurants, basically everyone is in on this). Kind of like when I ask people what they love most about their sex life, single women often reply that they don't have a sex life. Sex and love don’t have to exist only when there is someone to share it with. For couples, there's the "should we...celebrate?"
Sex and love fundamentally starts from within. And that’s when it clicked for me: Valentine’s day - a day that celebrates love - is in itself a beautiful idea. A reminder for ourselves to LOVE. And it’s your choice what or who or where or how YOU love.
So my invitation to you is to expand and explore what that love is for you. Look for places in your life where LOVE exists and celebrate it YOUR way today (and frankly, everyday!).
2. Did you know that VDay also stands for the One Billion Rising movement to stop violence against women?
It’s the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. Why one billion? Because statistics show that 1 in 3 women experience sexual assault or violence in her lifetime - and with the current world population standing at 7 billion people, half of which are women - that’s ONE BILLION women and girls who are likely affected
This movement was started by Eve Ensler, the same playwright who wrote the Vagina Monologues.
So from today until International Women’s Day on March 8th, you can choose to donate 15% of the profit from your Lila Sutra purchases towards Sinar Sofia. Sinar Sofia is a grassroots NGO that does outreach & rehabilitation work with women and girls who have been forced into sex work on the streets of Johor Bahru.
Just use the code: VLOVE at checkout.
It doesn’t actually cost you anything extra. Enjoy your goodies, be part of this movement and #RiseInSolidarity. It's a different way to celebrate love in this world!
With much love.
